All We Ever Wanted
by Emily Giffin
I read the Kindle eBook version.
All We Ever Wanted kept me hooked from beginning to end. I really had my doubts picking up another Emily Giffin book after The One and Only (it was terrible on so many levels!) but I am glad I did. In fact, out of all of her books I’ve read, this one might be my favorite so far.
This story centers around a rich – extraordinarily rich – family. Millionaire rich. Dad sold a software company a few years back and made oodles of money. And as expected, life changed for them. A lot. And, especially dad, seems to become more arrogant and entitled because of it. One of the family members makes a major misstep and it threatens to implode their family ties. Most of this is told from the wife’s perspective but there is also a high-school girl who is the center of a lot of action here, along with her father. It’s told from several perspectives.
I hesitate to say any more about this one because I don’t want to give away any of the suspense or what happens in the end. I blew through this book in just a few nights, staying up way later than I should have but not being able to put it down.
Although shallow on the surface, the story has a much more serious vein running through it – about respect and to be respectful even when no one is watching. How the lack of respect can destroy lives. (Yes, again, I’m being intentionally vague.) I know that sounds a little extreme, but as the book culminates, you can see how one simple act set off an avalanche of consequences. Will it destroy all they ever wanted? Read it and find out!
I’ve always felt Emily Giffin’s books were a little “fluffy” and cute. This one will still appeal to the chicklit crowd, but definitely has more grit and substance to it. I hope her writing continues to mature as I’m loving this!
