This week’s prompt is: Bookish Discoveries I Made In 2019
Welcome back to another week of Top Ten Tuesday!
For those of you that don’t know, Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018, where Jana posts in advance topics for us and we then make a post about them.
Here we go!
Bookish Discoveries I Made In 2019
2019 brought some legit discoveries for me. Below are the first ones that come to mind.
- Kindle Highlighting
I’ve been reading on a Kindle for a quite a while now but it wasn’t until this year I discovered the highlighting thing it can do. So cool! Now I highlight quotes I want to remember on a regular basis. I’ve also determined the Kindle is my current favorite way to read. For several reasons. This hasn’t always been the case.
- Blogging About Books… and movies, and food, and life, and more!
I had a small nail art gallery blog for about six months before we adopted. That all stopped when I became a mom and just recently I’ve found time to play with nail polish again – but really, nail art is kinda boring and it was more or less a way for me to diary my progress. For years I’ve wanted to have a blog, but I couldn’t settle on a topic – until 2019. It’s still evolving, but it’s definitely on its way now!
What?! This is a thing?! How did I not know about this?
- Cleaning up my to-read list and removing “Should Read” guilt
I finally got sick and tired of reading books I felt like I had to read or should read in 2019 and did a massive overhaul on my Goodreads shelf organization. (If you’d like a detailed post on how I did that let me know in the comments.) First, I got rid of all the books I knew I wasn’t ever going to bother with that were there because of some “Books You Should Read Before You Die” list. Second, I took the 100 Great American Read 2018 books (another self-imposed obligation of reading) and moved them into two separate shelves (GAR Read and GAR to-be read) and that left me a clean, self-curated list of books I put there because I thought they sounded good – not because someone else told me they were great – or classic – or something I needed to read – or anything else. My reading enjoyment went thru the roof immediately and therefore I read a ton more last year. Lesson learned.
- I just can’t do as many audiobooks as I used to.
I hate this. I freelance from home as a graphic designer/website designer now and just don’t drive very often – which is where I used to get all the audiobooking in. Now, it takes me a month to get through a book and that’s just not as much fun – especially when the book is a really good one. I just can’t listen and design at the same time. I try to listen while I fold laundry or do dishes, or sometimes in bed, but it just isn’t the same.
- Inter Library Loans
This might be my single biggest, most exciting discovery this year. For $1 each, I’ve been able to get my hands on every single book my library doesn’t offer. My only wish is that I could get them in Kindle version, but I’ll deal with it. I’ve been able to knock off books that have been languishing on my list for years in the past few months. How did I not know about this?! I’m tickled to no end about this discovery.
- Top Ten Tuesdays
I discovered and started participating in this group, thanks to my friend Rachel, at The Perspicacious Bookworm who showed it to me. I’m enjoying myself thoroughly and love reading all these other blogs and finding books to add to my future reading list!
I know it’s not ten bookish discoveries but I just can’t come up with anything else I discovered in the way of books last year. It was still a year of discovery and new territory for me. Is there anything you can think of I need to investigate this year? Let me know below and thanks for visiting!
