Directed by Jon Favreau
HEROES AREN’T BORN. THEY’RE BUILT.
After being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil.
This short, but succinct synopsis of the Iron Man movie truly sums up the whole story. You can tell it’s going to be an action movie, and there will be a lot of building and gadgetry involved. Further, it’ll be all about Tony.
What I Liked
This is the second time I’ve watched Iron Man. The first was early on in my relationship with my to-be husband, when it was first released. We probably saw it in the theater. I’m sure I didn’t have a clue back then that this was the beginning of the Marvel saga that would last well past ten years and of which every movie I’d get to watch with my husband. I do remember enjoying it the first time around. But then, I’m a sucker for the origin stories. (Spider-Man anyone?) I loved seeing “young” Tony Stark at the beginning of his journey and growing into more than an entitled playboy. And of course, because I’m a girl, seeing the very beginning of his romance with Pepper was fun too. I’ve seen them all, so I know where this goes. ♥
What I Didn’t Like
This time around the experience was still enjoyable, but not quite as much. Maybe this is because I’ve seen it before and it was too predictable. Maybe the romance wasn’t as clear. Maybe the special effects were lacking compared to what we get today. I suppose it could have been that it was too snarky – because Tony Stark seemed like SO much more of a cocky jerk in this one than he turns into down the road. And, maybe I’m letting my future knowledge tinge this movie watching experience a bit. I don’t know, but I didn’t love it as much as memory told me I did.
My Final Thoughts
Overall, I did enjoy this movie the second time around. It’s a straightforward storyline and easy (albeit, fast) to follow. It’s got some good music, lots of action, a coming-of-age bend, some great one-liners, and a budding romance. A fantastic start to the Marvel series on screen. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth the two hours to take it in.
