Directed by Paul Verhoeven
What it’s about:

What I Liked
I honestly thought I’d seen Basic Instinct before, but as I watched recalled absolutely nothing about this and I’m pretty sure this was a first time through for me. (Maybe I’ve just heard about it so much I thought I’d seen in?) Watching it felt like a naughty indulgence because this was not edifying in any way whatsoever – complete entertainment value. It was full of violence, language, and skin. Lots of skin. And suspense. “Erotic Thriller” would be a good description. There was a lot of trying to guess who was guilty and why the characters were doing what they were doing here. The way it was written/filmedy kept me in the dark and I felt like I was being mentally lead as the director wanted me to be. Honestly, I didn’t try too hard to figure the mystery out and just went with it. Whereas in Starship Troopers I felt the skin was unnecessary, it added something to this movie and worked. And I’m glad to step away from the humor genre after the last two movies.
Oh – and kinda cool, the last movie I watched, Starship Troopers, was also directed by Paul Verhoeven. So very different styles from the same director. (Robocop, which is on my to-watch list and Total Recall are also his.)
What I Didn’t Like
The girl was hot, but the guy was not. They didn’t look good together. She was too young and way too attractive for him. And what in heaven’s name did she see in him?!!
There were many parts that did not sustain believability for me. Even in the 90’s, some of this behavior wouldn’t have been tolerated. Especially not the relationship between Nick and the psychologist. I don’t think the attraction Nick felt for Catherine was well developed either. I mean – what on earth did he see in her?! Beyond the obvious. He’s spouting love in like a week and barely knows her… just not very realistic there buddy.
It also goes without saying the rape scene made me a bit uncomfortable.
My Final Thoughts
It’s a classic. I hear it referenced regularly and now I know about that scene they’re talking about. If you’re looking for something for the purpose of entertainment only – that isn’t a funny movie, this will do.
